80-minute couples counselling session

My career in mental health spans nearly a decade and during that time I’ve recognized the importance of tailoring my work to meet each client’s unique needs. I provide a collaborative environment to facilitate change and I meet all individuals at their own stage of readiness. As a psychologist, I utilize a strength-based approach that is grounded in Positive Psychology and employ an attitude of hope in all of my interactions. My practice is a combination of therapeutic techniques, which have demonstrated and researched effectiveness, as well as my personality which results in counselling often infused with analogies and humor. I typically utilize Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Solution-Focused Therapy while also grounding my work firmly in compassion and genuine care for my clients. I believe that by establishing a strong therapeutic relationship I can help my clients facilitate change, foster areas of strength, and create sustainable happiness.

My counselling-related experience includes working in the area of rehabilitative health where I’ve gained experience working with depression, anxiety, and chronic pain. I have also worked closely with survivors of domestic violence and families who have experienced loss and trauma. My shared identity as both a mother and a psychologist informs my passion for working to promote the mental well-being of mothers. I have a special interest in peri-partum and post-partum depression as well as working with individuals undergoing fertility struggles.

The therapeutic journey can take place through various forms. As we are all individuals with differing lived experiences, belief systems, and cultural viewpoints, finding the modality that suits your needs is a crucial aspect of treatment. Overall, my belief as a therapist is that every person has unique strengths and abilities that can be utilized in their therapeutic journey. I work with clients to develop a personalized treatment plan that incorporates their goals, values, and preferences.

My career in mental health and educational journey throughout my Master’s degree over the past 16 years has provided me with a breadth of experience working in rehabilitative health, universities, crisis intervention and group care settings. As a registered psychologist for the past 9 years, my approach is client-centered, collaborative, and grounded in strengths-based and multicultural perspectives. I utilize my training in solution-focused, narrative, cognitive-behavioural, acceptance and commitment, prolonged exposure, and motivational interviewing therapies to work with adults in individual counselling. I specialize in brain injuries, chronic pain, trauma-related mood disorders, depression and anxiety, grief and loss, motor vehicle accidents and career counselling.

Outside of my practice as a psychologist, I am a devoted father, avid sports fan, casual photographer, and motor vehicle enthusiast. I aim to utilize my diverse interests to establish rapport and develop an empathic therapeutic relationship upon which we will create a specialized treatment plan that best suits your needs. I look forward to assisting you through your journey.

Generally, individuals or couples seek counselling when they want some form of change in their lives, either within themselves or in their relationships with others. This can include a desire to change mood, perspective, attitude, habits and/or behaviours. As a doctoral-level psychologist with over 10 years of counselling experience, I enjoy working with clients at any stage of their change process, from contemplating change, to being ready to take action, as well as maintaining current well-being.

As a psychologist, I strive to develop a genuine relationship with clients, recognizing the importance of a supportive therapeutic environment. My overall approach to counselling is integrative, which allows me to be flexible in my work and tailor my approach to counselling to meet the unique needs of clients. It is my belief that our thoughts and behaviours influence how we feel and it is through changing ways of thinking and behaving that individuals or couples can learn to shift perspectives, alter feelings, and improve coping. Therapeutic frameworks from which I draw include: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, and Solution-Focused Therapy. Wherever possible, I incorporate elements of Positive Psychology into my work, viewing humour as an asset to the therapeutic process and recognizing the importance of hope and optimism when faced with difficulties. My therapeutic style can be characterized as warm and accepting with my practice being evidence-based, meaning that I utilize interventions that that have been well-researched with documented effectiveness.

My counselling related experience includes working in the area of rehabilitative health where I have extensive experience working in the area of traumatic psychological injuries (single incident or multiple traumas). I have also worked in general mental health centres and several different university counselling centres in New Brunswick, Ontario, and Alberta. I work to address these challenges by drawing from several evidence-based approaches including Narrative Practice, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. I am a doctoral level Registered Psychologist with 10 years of counselling and assessment experience and have had the opportunity to work with individuals and couples from diverse backgrounds. I believe that our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are all interconnected and if we change one area we can create change in another area. I also believe that people are capable of learning, unlearning, and relearning new ways to approach, solve, or understand their difficult life situations.

My way of approaching therapy matches my way of approaching life; which is why I chose to study this connection as my doctoral research topic. I am an authentic, active, and directive therapist who will work with you to accomplish your therapy goals. I am known to use humour, metaphors, and education to facilitate change. Ultimately, I believe that through warmth, compassion, and non-judgment that a safe and caring therapy environment can be created, which will allow you to feel comfortable sharing your personal information and difficulties.

My experience is derived from a number of sources including:

  • Working as a teacher and sessional instructor at the university level has shaped my approach whereby I often incorporate an educational component into my therapy sessions when appropriate
  • Completing two internships at a university counselling centre has enriched my skills in working with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and suicidality
  • Working in rehabilitation centres has facilitated my development in the areas of chronic pain, work related issues, developmental concerns, and health issues
  • My training and experience using Prolonged Exposure has helped me in working with single incident and cumulative trauma; including childhood abuse, trauma involving fatalities, and the First Responder population
